CarbnTrace is built so that your conversations stay yours. In short: the extension keeps its data in your browser, never sends it to us, and never stores what you write. The website uses analytics cookies only if you agree to them.

The Chrome extension

When you use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity, the extension looks at the requests your browser makes to those sites so it can estimate their energy use. From each request it records:

• the service and model used
• token counts, or an estimate of them
• response size and timing
• the address of the request and the time it was made

The text of your prompts and the replies is used only to count tokens at the moment you send it, and is then discarded. It is never stored.

These records are saved in your browser's local extension storage, up to the most recent 500. They are never sent to us or to anyone else. We don't run a server that receives them. You can delete them at any time with the extension's Clear button, or by removing the extension.

The extension only asks for the Chrome permissions it needs to do this, and only for the AI sites it supports.

If you use the share button, it opens X (Twitter) with a summary that you can edit before posting. Nothing is shared unless you post it.

This website: cookies and analytics

We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages people read. It helps us decide what to write next. It only runs if you press Accept on the cookie bar. Press Decline and nothing is loaded, nothing is set, and we learn nothing about your visit beyond the server logs below.

If you accept, Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser (named _ga and _ga_G-4R5ED10QPS, which last up to two years) and sends Google the pages you view, roughly where you are, and what browser and device you use. Google processes this on our behalf; your IP address is used to derive an approximate location and is not stored in the reports we see. We cannot identify you from it, and we do not link it to anything else.

Your choice is remembered in your browser, not in a cookie, under the name ct-analytics-consent. To change it, clear this site's data in your browser and choose again. Google explains its own handling in the Google privacy policy, and offers a browser opt-out add-on.

We use no advertising cookies and no other trackers. Our hosting provider, Amazon Web Services, may keep standard server logs, such as IP address and browser type, for security and reliability.

If you email us, we use your email address only to reply to you.

What we don't do

We don't sell, rent or share your data. We don't use it for advertising, and we don't use it to train AI models.
